How to get started using cloth diapers the simple way

Simple ways to cloth diapers do exist and by the end of this blog you’ll be ready to start. I do what to remind you that cloth diapers aren’t a one size fits all. It may take some time and practice but you’ll find a brand that works for baby. While cloth diapers aren’t one size fits all for the most part will last from birth until potty training and then on to the next child.

Types of cloth diapers

I have written a page previously about all the types of cloth diapers. I encourage you to check them out because it is going to help guide you and give you an idea of the type of diaper you are looking for.

Try before you buy

Most are simple, while others you may need to try out before you’ll know if they are right for you. The best way for you to know if they will work for you is to try them. Find a local cloth diaper retailer and ask about classes they may have.

Just like that you will be able test out a few and help you narrow down you research.

Accessories

One you have found the brand you love, for us it was Lighthouse Kids Company, you move onto the accessories. Just as with disposable diapers you don’t need much to get started.

I use a garbage can (kitchen size) with pail liners. I would say two is fine until you fall in love and see all the colors and prints you can choose from.

You’ll also want a few wet bags, these are great for more than cloth diapers. About 2-3 will be ok depending on how often you will be doing laundry. We will come back to the laundry part soon.

Will you be using cloth wipes? Let me be honest in say they are easy to use, and you don’t need to fish them out before throwing into the wash. If so a good 12-24 would be great along with a wipe warmer. All you need to do is add some water, coconut oil and essential oils.

Laundry

This for some is the turning point. The point that makes them want to give up on cloth diapering all together. I promise it is not that hard. I have created a guide with several different wash routines based on the washer type. Keep in mind the company may have their own recommendations.

I don’t ever recommend putting anything with PUL (the water proof material) in your dryer. This will help with your diapers lasting longer and if you decide to resell it will help the value.

Will you be taking the dive into the world of cloth diapers?
