The answer may seem like a simple one. You just know that it is. It's like a feeling in your gut. It is a past experience or a story you have heard. You just know.

If you ever speak to someone who has had an unassisted pregnancy and birth they all have their reasons. For some, it is because of a previous experience. For others, they have heard stories and they don't want to be another one. We also have some amazing families that their knowledge alone tells them their bodies were meant for this.

If you have ever experienced anything of the issues above then you know that you don't simply "get over". This may be one of the many reasons you may consider an unassisted birth. It is all about trust yourself and listening to your body.

Previous experiences

I was watching "Call the Midwife" and on season 7 episode 5 a mother is so scared to give birth to her child because of a previous birth experience. So scared that she rather hurt herself than go back to the hospital and have forceps used on her. Of course, as most amazing midwives would do they helped the mother know that one birth doesn't mean another will end up the same.

  1. Unassisted birth always intrigued me, but honestly I never felt it was for me. I had high risk deliveries both times and I was very happy to be in a Hospital, as they actually saved my life both times 🙂

  2. Great post for mother’s whwho are considering this option. It does take a lot of courage to go through childbirth no matter what you choose, assisted or unassisted birth.

  3. I’ve given birth 3 times and I don’t know that doing an unassisted birth would be for me, but I loved reading about your experience. Thanks so much for sharing with us.

  4. Wow this is not something I have ever thought about. I don’t have any kids yet but one day. Thanks for sharing

  5. I would always say it’s great to have a birth plan, but do be open to the fact that things may not go as you planned and assistance may be necessary. I would never have dared go unassisted, but that’s just me…

  6. My first birth was so traumatic that I never had a second one. Blood pressure of 250/150 that was almost a stroke.

  7. Everyone is different. I think an unassisted birth at home is great for those who can manage it, nothing more natural.

  8. Oh waow ! first of all I admire who does it !
I have one child and fortunately gave birth at the hospital ( little problems )
I would never have the courage to give birth without assistance !
Thanks for sharing your experience !

  9. I didn’t have an unassisted birth. I know a lot of women do, but I just wanted that extra security of knowing professionals were there.

  10. Having an unassisted birth means you’re likely giving birth in the comfort of your own home, without the assistance of a registered midwife or obstetrician. An unassisted home birth may be your only option if you can’t find a provider who will attend your birth at home because of distance or other factors, or if you are strictly against birthing at a hospital or birth center.

Having this kind of birth means you will be completely in control of your birth process, your surroundings and who you allow in your space.

    1. It is rare that someone will have an unassisted birth because of the cost alone but I have seen some go that route. A majority of the families would like to get back the respect they feel they lost at their last birth.

  11. Birth is not something I have experienced, but I appreciated reading your perspective on it. Thank you for sharing!
